A nationwide medical staffing company reports that vacancies for physicians are nearing 18%, while the vacancy rate for nurses is 17%, more than three times what it was just 4 years ago. Nurse practitioners and physician assistants are also in short supply, with AMN Healthcare reporting a vacancy rate of 15% in these categories. The news comes at a time when more than two-thirds of hospital executives expect an influx of newly insured patients due to PPACA.
